Each May, the students will take part in a Social Studies Fair. It is very similar to the Science Fair that the students completed in fourth grade.
Students will pick a subject from American history, and they will research the topic. The topic has to relate to something that was discussed in class this year. It can be a person, place event, document, etc.
Students will then write a paper (using multiple sources) and create a trifold poster talking about their subject. Students will also give a small presentation on their topic.
The students with the top three projects in the grade level will be awarded medals at the Fifth Grade Graduation Ceremony. This will be decided by all fifth grade teachers. It will be based on how well the student knew their topic and the effort that they put into their paper and poster.
2015-2016 Winners:
1st Place: Josh Sirkin; Topic: The Aztecs
2nd Place: MaKayla Le; Topic: The Sons of Liberty and Emily Metzger; Topic: Pearl Harbor (Tie)
3rd Place: Vivian Hoover; Topic: Christopher Columbus
Some past topics that students have chosen for their project are: The Three Branches of Government, The Mayans, The Boston Tea Party, George Washington, The Plains Indians, Cortes, The Declaration of Independence, How a Bill Becomes a Law, The Southern Colonies, Paul Revere, Yorktown, Phyllis Wheatley, Benjamin Franklin, etc. There are many topics to chose, but they must be approved by the teacher.
HOW IT WORKS:
-Late April: Teacher introduces the project to the students.
-Students decide on a topic, fill out the proposal form, and get their topic approved by their teacher.
-Students have time in class to work on their paper and poster. The teacher guides them through how to site sources for their project, find sources for their project, write their paper, and create a neat and organized trifold poster. Students will need to bring in a trifold poster for their project. Students will also be expected to do some work outside of the classroom.
-Students also find pictures for their trifold poster and they create a timeline to go on their trifold poster.
-Students finish their project by the due date, and they give a small presentation on their project. The teacher will use a rubric to grade all parts of the project.
-The fifth grade teachers meet to decide the top three projects, and the students with the top three projects are announced at the Fifth Grade Graduation Ceremony in May.
